It is common practice for a woman to undergo routine annual physical examination and testings as a preventative measure in maintaining good health. The goal of the Well Woman Exam is to identify and address any gynecological issues that may be undiagnosed by use of various screening methods. It is also the time when existing problems can be reassessed to insure that current therapy is still appropriate.
At Sunlife the typical Well Woman Examination usually covers:
- Yearly general physical and pelvic exams
- Breast exams
Pap Smear & HPV testing
- STD Screening, treatment and counseling
- HPV Vaccination (Gardisil)
- Assessment of incontinence
- Osteoporosis risk factor screening
- General cancer screen
- Lifestyle counseling (smoking cessation, weight loss and exercise counseling etc.)
What is HPV?
HPV is the common name for Human Papillomavirus, a viral infection spread through skin to skin sexual contact. HPV is a group of over 100 different viruses, with at least 30 strains known to cause different types of cancer. There is currently no cure for HPV.
Though there is currently no cure for HPV, there is a vaccine, Gardisil, that helps protect against the virus. SunLife offers this vaccine. Gardisil helps protect against cervical cancer, abnormal and precancerous cervical legions, abnormal and precancerous vulvar legions and genital warts.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist as well as the Center for Disease Control recommends the vaccine for girls and women 9 through 26 years of age.
